There is a quietness to Reclining Female that speaks volumes. In this striking limited edition offset lithograph, the late Anthony Armstrong draws the viewer into a world where the female form becomes both subject and symbol, rendered in the artist's signature fusion of Realism, Cubism, and Afrocentric Iconography.

The figure reclines in a state of ease, her body rendered in warm earth tones of terracotta, sienna, and burnt umber, flowing against a richly textured background alive with scattered flecks of color. Bold, continuous black contour lines weave through the composition, connecting limbs and curves in a way that recalls the visual language of Pablo Picasso while firmly grounding itself in the African American artistic tradition. The result is an image that feels simultaneously ancient and contemporary, classical and distinctly modern.

Armstrong was a painter, illustrator, graphic artist, and social commentary artist who described his work as rooted in his "rich cultural heritage" and his desire to create images that African American people could relate to "directly, with or without formal art training." Trained at the University of the District of Columbia and the Philadelphia University of the Arts, and a veteran of the United States Navy, Armstrong brought discipline, passion, and cultural pride to every canvas. He drew inspiration from Aaron Douglas and Romare Bearden, two pillars of African American art, while carving out a visual philosophy entirely his own.

Reclining Female stands as a celebration of Black womanhood in all its complexity, grace, and beauty. The figure is not idealized in the Western tradition but reimagined through an Afrocentric lens, her form expanding and contracting with the energy of the brushstroke rather than the constraints of conventional portraiture. She rests without apology, occupying her space with full sovereignty.

This print is a limited edition of 950, making it a meaningful and collectible addition to any serious art collection. Whether displayed in a home, office, or gallery setting, it carries the enduring spirit of an artist whose legacy continues to inspire.
